Abstract
Generative AI is rapidly reshaping Information Systems and Computing practice, yet its operationalization within organizations remains insufficiently understood. The study draws on focus groups with experts from a large multinational consultancy to examine how GenAI is currently integrated into business operations by IS and Computing professionals. Findings indicate that most organizations operate at early stages of AI maturity where GenAI functions primarily as a tool or assistant with some emerging uses of supervised agents. Building on these insights, the paper proposes a multidimensional GenAI Operations Progression Framework that outlines five maturity stages progressing from GenAI as a tool to GenAI workforce model. The framework integrates Work Practices and AI-Human collaborations, operational models of AI maturity, organizational enablement from education to institutionalization and governance from basic GenAI acceptance to AI embedded processes and operations.
