Abstract

As artificial intelligence (AI) diffuses across the healthcare industry, its impact on the core pillars of effective, compassionate, and efficient care remains uncertain. Grounded in Glouberman and Mintzberg’s "four worlds" model, this panel examines how AI reshapes the distinct logics of cure (clinical), care (nursing), control (administrative), and community (governance). Panelists will debate critical tensions, including clinician deskilling versus expertise augmentation, the potential for "algorithmic control" in resource allocation, and the challenge of maintaining authentic human compassion in AI-mediated interactions. By identifying trade-offs and complementarities across these domains, the panel seeks to outline a future research agenda for the Information Systems community to foster the responsible design and governance of AI in healthcare.

AI in Healthcare: Effective, Compassionate, Efficient – or None of the Above?
