Abstract

AI-enabled learning environments are reshaping how communication skills can be taught at scale in higher education and talent development. This study conceptualizes pronunciation training as a digital pedagogy problem and examines how two configurable features of AI-enabled learning environments, instruction illustration and AI-generated verbal narration, jointly affect pronunciation accuracy. Drawing on cognitive fit theory, we argue that learning outcomes depend on whether instructional representations match the cognitive demands of pronunciation practice tasks. We propose a 2-by-2 experiment comparing description-only illustrations versus descriptions with visualized illustrations and local versus foreign-accented narration. This study further theorizes that cognitive effort and emotional confusion mediate this relationship. This study contributes to digital learning research by explaining when AI-enabled pronunciation training can support scalable, ethical, and effective skill development.
