Description

Digital transformation poses unprecedented questions about the interaction of information systems and organizational forms. While valuable knowledge has been created about organizational forms in general and, more specifically, about the relation between specific information systems and particular organizational forms, a longitudinal and holistic analysis of their co-evolution is missing to date. This state prevents utilizing valuable established knowledge to address emergent challenges as well as identifying important gaps in our understanding. Therefore, this study systematically analyzes 42 high quality papers on the intercorrelation between IS and organizational forms. The study derives three meta-patterns: a continuous decentralization of organizational forms, a primacy of transition and a shift towards inherent technological value. The meta-patterns portray a shift towards a new narrative about the influence of information systems on organizational forms, which offers valuable future research opportunities. Linking the results to current phenomena of digital transformation provides actionable managerial implications for contemporary organizations.
