Description

The use of digital technology has enabled firms to distribute information such that collaborative work can be carried out asynchronously and/or between workers located in different physical locations. This has led to claims of policies such as flexi-time creating family-friendly working conditions as workers can, in principle, choose to work from anywhere and at any time, thereby integrating the needs of work and family life. Given the historical association of the woman with the domestic sphere, family-friendly work has become synonymous with female-friendly work. I argue that it is not merely access to information but agency over the scheduling of working time in practice that enables participation of women in the workforce. To analyze the processes that shape this agency I propose to use Rob Stones’ strong structuration theory to study time practices of women who have returned to work after maternity leave in the Indian software services sector.
