Abstract
Inter-organisational data sharing within data sharing ecosystems enables organisations to co-create value through collaborative orchestration. Alignment among ecosystem participants regarding their incentives for their contribution in value co-creation is crucial for ecosystems evolution and sustainability. While research in data studies recognizes that incentives motivate data sharing participation, however, a gap remains in understanding how to align participant incentives with ecosystems’ objectives. Drawing on Agency Theory, Value Network Theory and Teece’s Business Model Framework, this short paper proposes a formal model of incentive alignment to indicate the conditions of macro-micro goal congruence. An empirical study will be conducted on a use-case of Mobility Data Space to evaluate and validate the alignment conditions. Our study advances the discourse on the business dimension of data sharing ecosystems by formalizing the link between incentive structures and ecosystem viability. Thus, this research will enable orchestrators to structure value distribution and build innovative incentive mechanisms within data sharing ecosystems.
