Abstract

Innovation is critical for established organizations to survive and thrive in the context of emerging technologies. However, despite innovation becoming a central topic in information systems research, there are limited studies exploring how established organizations can keep innovating. To address this gap in literature, this study asks: How does an established organization keep innovating in the ever-changing technological environment? We report on an ongoing interpretive case study informed by organizational history research and explore how Disney has managed to innovate with technology for the past century. In our preliminary analysis, we found that the Disney’s innovation activities happen within and consist of frames in-between initial creation and the latest designs, which we refer to as ‘liminal frames’. This short paper presents the concept of liminal frames and, as next steps, we plan to further explore its implications for the continuous innovation journey of an established organization.
