Abstract

The healthcare sector is struggling with the challenges of demographic change and a shortage of healthcare professionals. Especially informal caregivers often lack information and support. Digitalization can play an important role to effectively support informal caregivers delivering adequate care. We use a Design Science Research approach by first conducting a market analysis of care apps to gain an overview of the current offered apps. In the second evaluation cycle, we conduct a quantitative survey to analyze the perceived importance of several app functionalities. Thirdly, a prototype is instantiated and presented within semi-structured interviews with informal caregivers to gain in-depth knowledge regarding the app design. Providers can enhance their care app development process by integrating recommendations regarding content, user interface and barrier-free elements. Our research also extends the current literature concerning informal caregiver needs and user-friendly design. Future studies should evaluate the feasibility and usability of the proposed design principles.
