Abstract

This study addresses the emerging need for Information Systems research to understand the cognitive and social factors influencing the adoption of digital health technologies, particularly among vulnerable populations with cognitive impairments. We propose an integrative theoretical model that synthesizes Cognitive Load Theory and Social Cognitive Theory to explore this phenomenon. Our conceptual research bridges the gap between traditional technology acceptance models and cognitive theories, offering a more comprehensive framework for understanding digital health adoption and behavior change beyond mere acceptance. We developed a cognitive adoption theory model comprising relevant relationships and constructs by utilizing a theorizing from literature approach and grounded theory concepts. Therefore, the study's implications encompass a more holistic understanding of the dynamic interplay between cognition and social contexts in digital health adoption among people with cognitive impairments. While acknowledging the limitations of our model, we encourage challenges to the theory and lay the groundwork for future research in this domain.

A Proposal for Theorizing the Cognitive Adoption of Digital Health Technologies for People with Cognitive Impairments
