Abstract
While the opportunities for organizations to create value from data are increasing, it is important for organizations to leverage data to create or maintain competitive advantage. However, existing research focuses on empirically elaborating distinct aspects such as data monetization or data-driven business models. This study develops an overarching framework that identifies possible options for organizational data value creation. To this end, a systematic literature review was conducted. The identified options for organizational data value creation were systematized using a two-dimensional classification scheme according to the underlying value object and the value type an organization seeks, resulting in the Data Value Creation Matrix. The results contribute to a coherent understanding of data value creation in academia by providing a consolidated overview of the options available. For practitioners, the matrix provides a starting point for rethinking previously pursued options and identifying new approaches to data value creation.
