Abstract
Organizations nowadays employ big data analytics (BDA) in their transformation towards a data-driven organization (DDO). However, the success rate of data-driven transformations remains at a quite low level. In academia, the concept of a BDA capability (BDAC) is viewed as the key enabler in realizing business value out of data-driven initiatives. Although there exists clarity on the relationship between a BDAC and business value realization, extant research lacks a coherent understanding of how a BDAC is constructed. In this short paper, we introduce the concept of resource complementarity as a new perspective in studying the BDAC construction process. In doing so, we present a research framework that complements the predominant resource-based perspective with a system-oriented view. We then describe our plan for conducting a meta-synthesis to identify BDA-related resource complementarities, thereby advancing our theoretical understanding of how to establish a BDAC and realize business value.
