Abstract

Digital innovation is an important driver of competitive advantage for organizations. However, there is an imbalance in our knowledge of digital innovation perspectives, leaning towards a market-based view. This poses a problem for lower-tier actors in supply chains, like producers, that have limited customer access and are subject to cost pressures from retailers. Against this backdrop, we adopt an extended resource-based view on digital innovation and introduce the concept of resource-based digital innovation, emphasizing the potential of collaborative digital resource creation. Based on a consortium research approach in the dairy industry, we design a conceptual framework comprising five building blocks of resource-based digital innovation and evaluate the framework through a real-world demonstration in the consortium. Our findings link the existing bodies of knowledge on digital resources and digital innovation, inspire scholars to further explore the concept of resource-based digital innovation, and guide practitioners in creating digital resources.
