Abstract

This paper investigates the post-adoption behavior of organizations using blockchain in the food supply chain sector. It aims to understand how organizations address tensions arising from blockchain utilization – an area not extensively covered in current research. Existing research primarily focuses on initial technology acceptance or rejection, with less attention given to the ongoing adoption process involving improvisation and tension-driven workaround adjustments associated with blockchain use. Grounded on two qualitative case studies with 23 informants, this study examines organizational workaround actions for resolving tensions with blockchain uses. We identified four workaround adjustments: data, procedural, parallel system, and role adjustments. These adjustments illustrate a complex, multifaceted organizational approach to blockchain adoption, underscoring the need for dynamic and nuanced strategies to tackle post-adoption challenges. Our findings demonstrate the intricate nature of resolving tensions, advocating for strategic and diverse adjustments in blockchain integration.
