Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is widely hailed as a disruptive technology that will not only lead to the emergence of new and innovative business models, but also redefine what constitutes an organization, as well as how an organization can effectively operate. Concurrently to the widespread adoption of AI and its ever-increasing technological maturity, a vibrant community of scholars is studying its impact on organizing and the future of work, how AI drives innovation, as well as its implications for practice. Therefore, we believe that the time is ripe to bring together leading scholars with different research foci and diverse methodological preferences to discuss, provide direction, as well as debate, how AI will affect management theory and practice. This panel will serve as a forum to elaborate on i) how we can build a cumulative tradition and what lessons can be learned from past emerging technologies, ii) how AI related research differs from past work, iii) what are the challenges and opportunities associated with the increasing permeation of AI in organizations, as well as iv) identify areas that future research pertinent to AI should focus upon. In a facilitated discussion, we will raise these issues, providing ample opportunities for participants to engage, raise questions, and learn from their peers to design and conduct top management research focusing on the implications of AI.
