Abstract

This debate focuses on the questions of novelty and depth of the now burgeoning research stream on digital transformation. Specifically, we debate whether the digital transformation literature has uncovered the unique nature of the phenomenon. Whether it surfaces the distinctive role that digital technology plays in such transformations, thereby opening new avenues for discovery and prescient theorizing on the cutting-edge managerial questions that practitioners are struggling with today. More provocatively: did Information Systems scholars waste the last 10 years focusing on simply extending traditional organizational transformation research questions to the digital transformation realm? The debate takes the perspective of Information Systems, as the discipline at the intersection of technology and organizations. We use the provocation in the title to surface deeper question for the field and serve as the catalyst for the audience to think about the unique role that the Information Systems discipline can play at the center of “digital research” in the business fields – beyond digital transformation.
