Abstract
Thomas Davenport and D.J. Patil's influential articles established the relevance of data science as a highly valued profession, due to a labour market demand with high salaries and scarcity of qualified professionals. This paper explores how these fields have evolved in Portugal’s labour market and educational system. It assesses governmental initiatives such as the Recovery and Resilience Plan and INCoDe.2030, aimed at fostering digital transformation and innovation. A detailed analysis of academic offerings in Portugal reveals an increase in degree programs related to data science and AI, reflecting growing market demands for qualified professionals. The research methodology, grounded in Kitchenham’s framework, focuses on bachelor's degrees to evaluate the progression of these programmes, identifying trends in course availability and specialisation. This paper demonstrates that academia’s offerings in the fields of computing and data analytics reflect the growing importance of these areas as well as the alignment between educational programmes and labour market demands.
