Abstract

The use of social media has increasingly become a common practice. This study investigated the potential impacts of social media on children's development and education using a mixed methodology, including bibliographic research and field surveys conducted with parents/guardians of children aged 12 months to 10 years. According to INE data, digital skills have increased in Portugal. The investigation revealed that 55.2% of children use social media, such as YouTube Kids and TikTok, generally for less than three hours daily. The benefits identified include the strengthening of social bonds and the stimulation of creativity. However, significant risks were also highlighted, such as exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and negative impacts on mental health. Consequently, parental supervision has become crucial. Many parents have adopted practices such as active supervision, setting usage rules, and educating about online risks. The study suggests a balanced approach to leveraging the benefits of social media while implementing strategies to mitigate the risks.
