Abstract
The integration of artificial intelligence in IT projects is shifting the fundamental roles, professional obligations, and interpersonal dynamics of project leaders. It is critical to understand 1) What new leadership competencies are required for IT project leaders to effectively lead projects with integrated AI capabilities? 2) How do emerging AI-era leadership competencies among IT project managers influence project outcomes? This research will explore these questions using exploratory qualitative methods via semi-structured interviews with IT professionals in leadership roles. The resulting insights will provide a conceptual model of AI-era leadership competencies for IT project leaders and derive propositions about the relationships between these competencies and project outcomes. Our research will also provide practical insights to organizations developing AI training programs aimed at closing the training gap that prevents professionals from leveraging AI technologies effectively.
