Abstract
This paper argues that encompassing a multidimensional view of sustainability is important in the quest for a sustainable future. We develop the notion of multidimensional digital sustainability which refers to creating a positive impact on more than one dimension of sustainability simultaneously via the use of digital technology. We exemplify this through an empirical case study of the company SustainablIS. We describe their journey of addressing and developing solutions to address both environmental, social and economical dimensions of sustainability. Moreover, the company used digital technology as a means to achieve sustainability but also included considerations of the possibly unsustainable impacts of the technology itself. We argue that seeing digital sustainability as multidimensional is necessary for addressing sustainability in an integrated manner, and we provide an illustration of how this is possible in practice.
