Editorial

Welcome to the winter issue of the 35th volume of the Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems (SJIS). As the year ends, a rotation in the journal’s editorial team is imminent. Sune Dueholm Müller from Denmark is ending his tenure as editor-in-chief and exiting the editorial board. Louise Harder Fischer from the IT University of Copenhagen is entering the board and will represent Denmark. From January 2024, Henri Pirkkalainen will take over the reins as Editor-in-Chief.

This issue of SJIS includes two papers and two reflection notes. The first paper by Mathilde Hogsnes, Tor-Morten Grønli, and Kjeld Hansen is entitled “Unconsciously Influential. Understanding sociotechnical influence on social media”. In the paper, the authors apply a sociotechnical perspective in examining the interaction between social and technological elements and their influence on social media. They identify the actors and how they influence the commercial content of social media platforms. Their findings provide an understanding of the involuntary, yet crucial role people play in influencing products and services, the interconnectedness of individuals’ social and commercial content on the platforms, and the difficulty for people to critically engage with the content they interact with.

The second paper, “A Procedure Model for Integrating Retailers into Digital Platforms”, is written by Sebastian Reiners, Andreas Hermann, Ann-Kristin Cordes, Torsten Gollhardt, and Jörg Becker. The authors contribute a so-called procedure model for integrating retailers into digital platforms. Their analysis shows that incorporating retailers into digital platforms can be standardized to various types and levels following certain guidelines detailed in the suggested procedural model. This model is founded on requirements from the scholarly literature on retail, digital platforms, and systems integration. Moreover, the model has been improved and further developed using insights gained from practitioner interviews.

The first reflection note is written by Andrew Burton-Jones. We have invited all three keynote speakers at the 14th Scandinavian Conference of Information Systems who also included Kalle Lyytinen and Olivia Benfeldt to share their reflections based on the topics of their keynote presentations. We have asked them to write their reflections in a Q&A-style based on predefined questions. These reflections are written from the three unique perspectives that the keynote speakers represent: The insider (Kalle), outsider (Andrew), and newcomer (Olivia). In this issue, we include Andrew’s reflections.

The second reflection note is written by Sune Dueholm Müller and Anna Abalkina. They offer complementary perspectives on the recent SJIS hijacking. This note includes the personal reflections of the editor-in-chief (Sune Dueholm Müller) as an IS and SJIS insider and a commentary by an outsider, the journal hijacking expert and researcher Anna Abalkina.

A heartfelt thank you to all the authors, reviewers, and readers of the journal. You are the Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems. Without you, there would not be a journal. As always, we want to express our gratitude for the services our production manager, Jacob Nørbjerg, provides to the journal and our Scandinavian research community.
