Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems

Editorial

Welcome to the summer issue of the 35th volume of the Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems (SJIS). As always, a new year implies a rotation in the journal’s editorial team. Sune Dueholm Müller from Denmark is now the new Editor-in-Chief. Olgerta Tona replaced Katrin Jonsson as the editor representing Sweden. We welcome Olgerta to the team. We are deeply grateful to Katrin for her efforts and engagement in bringing the journal forward.

Unfortunately, the past half year has been challenging for the journal. At the beginning of February, we discovered a fake SJIS website and an attempt to hijack our brand by pretending to be the official home of the journal. The cybercriminals behind the website are trying to scam scholars into submitting papers and paying for publications. You may have noticed a warning was sent out in mid-February using the AISWorld Listserv. At the time of writing this editorial, we are still fighting the criminals, and we plan to share our experiences in an opinion paper that will be published as soon as possible. Meanwhile, please remember that our official website is: https://aisel.aisnet.org/sjis/ and warn your colleagues about this scam. This issue of SJIS includes four papers.

The first paper is entitled “The Anatomy of Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems,” written by Sune Dueholm Müller, Katrin Jonsson, Henri Pirkkalainen, Elena Parmiggiani, and Olgerta Tona. The paper attempts to synthesize and communicate the editorial focus and policy of the Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems to the journal’s current and future authors and readers. To that end, the paper reviews the journal’s history, publications over time, and its place in the Scandinavian IS tradition. The perspectives of former editors-in-chief on SJIS are included and used as a basis for describing the identity of the journal. The aim of this paper is to inspire authors to address interesting Information Systems problems from a perspective rooted in Nordic values. Additionally, prospective authors are given guidance regarding the types of studies and submissions that the journal welcomes.

The second paper, “Improving the Impact of Big Data Analytics Projects with Benefits Dependency Networks,” is written by Maria Hoffmann Jensen, Peter Axel Nielsen, and John Stouby Persson. It is an invited fast-track publication of a SCIS 2021 paper. The paper contributes to research on how organizations can generate value from big data analytics projects. The authors report on an action research study of the wind turbine company Vestas and its efforts to improve benefits realization. They introduce the benefits dependency network, a map of the relationships between technology, organizational change, stakeholders, and big data analytics benefits. They also present a benefits dependency network method and discuss, among other things, its usefulness in big data analytics projects and how to use it with existing project methodologies.

The third paper is “A Hierarchical Framework of Challenges for Blockchain Adoption in Public Services: Implications for Decision-makers,” written by Sujeet Kumar Sharma, Santosh K. Misra, Yogesh K Dwivedi, and Nripendra P. Rana. The paper deals with the challenges of blockchain adoption in government. Based on a literature review and focus-group discussions, the paper focuses on public service delivery challenges in the developing country context of India, and it provides a framework for policymakers to plan strategic actions to facilitate blockchain adoption. The fourth paper is “Enterprise Systems Implementation and Their Impact on Employee Job Outcomes: A Review of the Literature, Synthesis, and Framework,” by Mukesh Narmetta and Satish Krishnan. The article reports on a systematic literature review on the implementation of enterprise systems and employee job outcomes. This review is conducted against the backdrop of many reported difficulties organizations experience in reaping the benefits of their investments in these systems to improve strategic decision-making and support operational excellence. Based on the review, the authors propose a framework meant to help researchers and practitioners understand state-of-the-art knowledge and guide them in future research.

We want to express our gratitude to all the authors, reviewers, and readers of the journal. You are the lifeblood of SJIS. Also, a big thank you to our production manager, Jacob Nørbjerg, who takes care of all the important work behind the scenes after a paper has been accepted. Finally, we hope to see many of you at the 46th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS2023) and the 14th Scandinavian Conference of Information Systems (SCIS2023) in Finland, 13-16 August 2023.
