Editorial

Welcome to the second issue of volume 33 of the Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems. This issue includes two regular research papers and a special section on Sustainable Development Goals in IS Research. We take the opportunity to thank our authors and reviewers for their great work and support to the journal.

The two regular research papers of this issue are both based on literature reviews. The first regular paper is entitled “Creating the Socio-technical Context Needed to Derive Benefits from Big Data Initiatives in Healthcare” and is authored by Truth Lumor, Mirja Pulkkinen, Ari Hirvonen and Pekka Neittaanmäki. Adopting a socio-technical perspective, and drawing on a systematic literature review, the authors present recommendations for establishing the socio-technical context required for deriving benefits from big data initiatives in healthcare. Furthermore, they synthesize the recommendations into a set of heuristics and a model for guiding managerial efforts and research.

The second paper is entitled “Nature and Purpose of Conceptual Frameworks in Design Science” and is authored by Pedro Antunes, Nguyen Hoang Thuan and David Johnstone. This paper explores the nature and purpose of conceptual frameworks in design science. The authors performed a literature review and identified at which research stages conceptual frameworks are used, and what purposes they support. Based on the review, the authors suggest a decision model for using conceptual frameworks in design science.

The special section on Sustainable Development Goals in IS Research includes an editorial by the three special issue editors (Helle Zinner Henriksen, Devinder Thapa and Amany Elbanna) and three research papers that address different types of digital infrastructures for sustainability in healthcare, food security and work. The articles demonstrate how technology can make a difference at the level of the individual, communities and society. We would like to thank the special issue editors and paper authors for foregrounding the contribution of IS research to the sustainability agenda.

The Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems welcomes submissions from all over the world that address current IS topics and engage in a critical discourse informed by the Scandinavian IS tradition.
