Abstract

Existing Electronic Health Record (EHR) research is largely focused on the implementation while the post-implementation phase remains understudied. However, this phase is no less critical for realizing the benefits, and healthcare organizations are often uncertain about how to proceed after go-live. A systematic literature review of qualitative studies was conducted to explore challenges faced by organizations during the post-implementation phase of EHR systems and identify research areas that need more attention in future EHR research. We identified 23 articles addressing challenges in this context. Standardized routines meeting local practices prove to be a key challenge as well as ecosystem complexity, technical and usability challenges, and institutional conditions. We call for further research to explore strategies for the post-implementation phase of EHRs.
