Abstract
The research aims to investigate the use of management information systems (MIS) in South African higher education environments. MIS in higher education have been adopted to provide information to manage an organisation effectively, the information provided by the MIS is considered an important part of a reasonable business decision. Unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) and MIS contingency theory support the study. Users’, fit, system, management and organisational characteristics are some of the constructs defined that make up the contextualised model for MIS use in higher education environments. Closed ended questionnaires will be distributed to employees in higher educational institutions within Gauteng province; these institutions will include traditional universities, universities of technology and further education train (FET) colleges. Semi-structured follow up interviews will be conducted so as to get an understanding of the phenomena. The paper concludes by mentioning some of the benefits that could be derived from this research
