Description
Health information technologies (HITs) are increasingly viewed as an essential component of delivering sustainable and equitable healthcare. Although HITs provide an array of opportunities they are accompanied by persistent challenges. Building on established reviews, we performed a systematic review to answer the following research question: What are the salient opportunities and challenges associated with HITs revealed in health information systems research? Over 180 studies were included in the review. Through inductive analysis, we identified three opportunity themes (i.e., health informedness, patient-provider engagement, and enhancing the profession) composed of six subthemes, and three challenge themes (i.e., resistance, threats to professional identities, data concerns) comprised of eight subthemes. Following an analysis of these themes, a future research agenda was created to promote cumulative research into realising the potential of the opportunities of HITs whilst also overcoming the challenges.
