Description

Many studies have shown Augmented reality’s (AR) disruptive potential by seamlessly integrating virtual elements into the real world. Nonetheless, AR’s adoption remains limited or fragmented across industries. This study explores the potential of use cases as a tool for prospective sensemaking of using AR in organizational contexts. Based on a systematic literature review and 24 interviews with internationally recognized AR experts, we identify and categorize 28 primary use cases and 110 sub-use cases across 12 industry domains. The resulting AR use case classification provides a comprehensive understanding of AR applications, informing organizations about AR’s capabilities and better aligning AR implementation with their goals. By providing a structured overview, the result of this study facilitates both making sense of the potential use of AR and a more reasoned adoption process of AR use.
