Description
Compared to the wide discussion on the adoption of instrumental artificial intelligence (AI), the research on the emerging type of AI (i.e., AI companions) is still rare. To fill this gap, this study tries to identify the key antecedents of the adoption of the AI companions and reveal how and when these factors work. Specifically, drawing upon the cognition-emotion-conation framework, this study proposes perceived virtuality, perceived anthropomorphism, and perceived relationality as three key AI characteristics, and theorizes that these factors will affect adoption intention through two emotions namely attachment and entertainment. Further, the relationships between these two emotions and adoption intention are moderated by attachment anxiety/avoidance and AI anxiety. A survey was conducted to test the proposed hypotheses and the results confirmed most of them. Finally, the theoretical contributions and practical implications of the study are discussed.
