Description

Despite the increasing use of digital decision support in healthcare, research has found that medical decisions are often suboptimal, due to time pressure for instance. One approach that can alter medical professionals’ decision-making towards more optimal decisions is digital nudging. Digital nudges are interface elements that guide medical professionals without limiting their decision-making authority. The concept of digital nudging is relatively new to Health IS and research and practice is not yet aware of the full integration possibilities. To overcome this gap, our study presents a taxonomy that summarizes the implementation decisions of digital nudging into medical software. The taxonomy is systematically derived based on 43 nudges implemented in real HIS, extending knowledge on mechanisms that enhance digital medical decision-making. The taxonomy can be used by research and practice to implement context-specific digital nudging initiatives.
