Description
Conversational Artificial Intelligence (CAI) in healthcare offers the potential for personalized patient support and reduced workload for healthcare providers (HPs). Despite its promise, research on patient and HP engagement with CAI, particularly CAI’s impact on these users’ empowerment and health outcomes, is limited. This study aims to address this gap by exploring the interaction with CAI through a comprehensive mixed-methods approach. We hypothesize that different CAI interaction modalities – patient-CAI, HP-CAI and a triadic patient-HP-CAI – will improve user empowerment and outcomes compared to interactions between patients and HPs. We will analyze these modalities using a quantitative field study design, complemented by qualitative analysis of CAI capabilities and their alignment with user needs. Our research aims to provide insights into the effective use of CAI in healthcare that will improve patient health outcomes and HP reduced workload, thus making a significant contribution to Health Information Systems.
