Abstract

Recent studies explain the inconsistent effects of group support systems (GSS) on group performance using contingency theories with moderators mainly related to group dynamics and task nature. Little attention has been paid to potential effects of information representation. Most existing GSS use linear representations. Though hypertext has been shown by previous studies to be superior to linear text in many aspects, it has rarely been applied in GSS. In this study, we propose a method for integrating GSS and hypertext and we illustrate it through a prototype: the Hyperthought. We provide the theoretical justification for the proposed method, discuss the integration challenges and their resolution and discuss the benefits of the implemented design.
