Abstract
The focus of this research paper explores examples regarding which cybersecurity best-practices are used by SMEs from a socio-technical perspec- tive. This research paper’s data was derived from the empirical part of a study about improving Small to Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) cybersecurity guid- ance. The primary research of the study is a snapshot which consisted of semi- structured interviews with five different participants each from an SME. The- matic analysis was used to develop the main overarching themes and sub- themes used within the analysis phase of the study. The findings presented are that basic cybersecurity measures are employed by SMEs, mainly technical, however more advanced best practices are neglected, mostly in the social realm. Several barriers were identified such as, Financial, people, time and knowledge constraints all contributed to limiting the implementation of more advanced cy- bersecurity practices. The final remarks focus on how this study can be im- proved in future research including the limitations and contributions.
