Abstract

Drawing from extensive field research and descriptions of how CarMax and The Washington Post transformed, this article advocates shifting from managing IT projects to digital product management, thus enabling nimbler, digital-first enterprises that can adapt in the face of increasing environmental uncertainty. Such transformations are facilitated by adopting Agile and DevOps practices to create a radically different engagement model based on stable, cross-functional teams that are empowered to prioritize continuous innovation and business outcomes over traditional project objectives.
