Abstract
Technostress is a significant and growing problem in organizations , resulting in adverse effects on employees ’ well-being. Despite the increasing scholarly interest in the phenomenon , studies on the underlying conditions contributing to technostress have largely focused on information technology (IT) characteristics , leaving the social aspects that contribute to employee s’ technostress poorly understood . Therefore, t his study explores how social environmental conditions influence employees ’ IT use demands and technostress. Our findings, which are b ased on our qualitative study and data from 26 semi -structured interviews with game development industry employees , identify and explain how 10 distinct social environmental conditions across three social structures (industry, organization, and team/pair) shape employees’ IT use demands and contribute to the emergence of technostress . Our study contributes to research and practice by expanding the scholarly understanding of technostress, identifying how different social structures can influence IT use demands at work, and providing practical insights for mitigating technostress in organizations
