Abstract
This study investigates the role of the data owner in data governance in organizations. We conducted an integrative literature review along with the analysis of conferences and current books with the objective of the different existent angles of the role of data owner in the literature and practice to clarify the best practices and their roles and responsibilities. We describe the evolution within the last decades, in the form of how organizations manage and use their data, shifting the prism of the governance from usual issues of storage and recovery to more complex obstacles in the interoperability, integrity, quality, accuracy and usability of data. This research uncovers new emergent models for data management and governance for high volume and velocity data, that aligns with business strategy, policies, authoritative positions and controls promoting a better decision-making in complex and challenging environments.
