Information systems (IS) and their underlying digital technologies play a dual role in relation to environmental sustainability. On the one hand, sustainability-related challenges and environmental concerns have become increasingly prominent in discussions of technological development and adoption, fueled by recent developments around artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. For instance, the explosion of AI has resulted in the construction of global data centers where solar, wind, and hydroelectric pow-er need to be harnessed to create shared computation pools. The production, operation, and widespread use of digital innovations contribute to resource depletion, high energy consumption, and electronic waste, raising critical questions about long-term ecological impacts. Moreover, the rapid pace of technological advancement can exacerbate issues such as carbon emissions and the excessive consumption of natural resources.
