Digitalization has moved beyond enabling organizational efficiency and market connectivity to becoming a defining infrastructure of everyday life and collective futures. While digital technologies continue to hold promise for inclusion and well-being, their societal consequences are neither uniform nor inevitable, often differing across social, institutional, and regional contexts. In particular, consequences emerge through complex interactions among technologies, institutions, cultures, political power and everyday practices. Digital technologies may create new forms of vulnerability and inequality, but at the same time they facilitate opportunities for participation and collective action. The speed and scale of technological change continue to outpace our theoretical and empirical understanding of its consequences. It is therefore imperative for IS scholarship to engage not only with impacts, but also with responsibilities and the broader societal implications. The IS community is uniquely positioned to examine how digital technologies are socially embedded and politically consequential.
