Digital platforms have become a dominant organizational form for socio-economic activity, enabling new modes of value creation, exchange, and innovation at scale. The sharing economy allows individuals and organizations to exchange underutilized assets or resources for monetary gains at low transactional costs. Under this broad umbrella, platform-mediated value creation can stem from user-owned assets (e.g., Airbnb and Uber), or take place through the renting of company-owned resources (e.g., CitiBike and Lime). Fueling the explosion of the sharing economy are multi-sided digital platforms which, by connecting actors throughout the world for little marginal cost, facilitate interactions, transactions, and innovation in a seamless fashion across a variety of contexts: finance, entertainment, software development, dating, and transportation, to name a few. Many of these emerging business models would not have been possible without the growing societal transition into distributed modes of innovation and production, e.g., in the context of mobile apps, that leverage the capability of digital platforms and technological infrastructures to orchestrate the coordination of distributed and heterogeneous individuals and organizations. The sharing economy has also driven new ways of working because these platforms connect workers to people who will pay for tasks to be completed, as exemplified on Uber, DoorDash, and Upwork. Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used to coordinate and manage these connections, shape platform governance, as well as efficiently manage operations and pricing. The continued integration of AI into sharing economy apps gives rise to issues surrounding algorithmic management, trust, privacy, and security as AI coordinates and controls, and in doing so absorbs massive quantities of data.
