Wave after wave of novel technologies—ranging from traditional information technologies and digital infrastructures to data-intensive systems and artificial intelligence—are continually enabling new products, services, processes, and modes of organizing. Innovations grounded in enterprise IT, mobile and distributed computing, platforms, analytics, generative AI, blockchain, Internet of Things, cloud computing, extended reality, and robotics are reshaping how value is created, captured, and governed across organizational and societal domains. At the same time, these technologies increasingly shape environmental footprints, labor relations, data governance, and social inclusion/ exclusion, highlighting their dual potential to advance sustainability and equity or to intensify resource consumption, surveillance, and inequality. Importantly, innovation and entrepreneurship increasingly differ not only by technological approach (e.g., IT-enabled, digitally enabled, data-driven, or AI-augmented), but also by value orientation and context. Corporate innovation, new venture creation, and platform entrepreneurship coexist with social innovation, public sector innovation, and community-based forms of entrepreneurship aimed at empowerment, inclusion, and socio-environmental sustainability. Digital and AI-enabled social innovation and social entrepreneurship, for example, illustrate how accessible technologies and emerging AI capabilities can support new forms of service delivery, coordination, and problem-solving—particularly in marginalized or resource-constrained or climate vulnerable settings. At the same time, the rapid diffusion of AI and platform-based business models raises critical challenges related to algorithmic opacity, bias, accountability, labor precarity, environmental costs of computation, and uneven access that demand careful scholarly attention.
