Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a phenomenon in the making, and we are still discovering its true nature. Information systems (IS) research has paid significant attention to AI’s organizational potential and adverse effects. In this short paper, we have begun to highlight the performativity of AI identity as a longitudinal, dynamic, and socially constructed process within the organization. We present preliminary findings from a 28-month ethnographic case study of a machine learning (ML) predictive maintenance system for wind turbines, during which we followed the making of the AI's identity. Our initial findings indicate that two key features of AI, uniqueness and usefulness, are part of a broader picture of how the identity-making process unfolds over time and through interactions with domain experts.
