Description
To withstand the COVID-19 pandemic, communities need to follow the healthcare guidelines provided by public health authorities such as the CDC. In this research we examine to what extent governors’ social media posts and resilience messaging within those posts impact the time residents in their states spend at home and avoid non-essential trips. We created a panel data set of U.S. states using community mobility scores, governors’ tweets, new cases, and state’s response data for the period between March 2020 and December 2020 (44 weeks). We use recent advances in natural language processing to measure resilience-related content in governors’ tweets. We find that governors’ tweets about COVID per se have limited impact, while resilience-related tweets is positively associated higher level of community conformity. our study can provide a set of guidelines for political leaders to be able to more effectively communicate with their constituents.
