Description

Over the last decade, powerful digital platforms orchestrating ecosystems with millions of complementors have leveraged value co-creation to form tempting centers of gravitas. The nexus for prosperity or failure of such platforms often lies in the early stages of platform development. However, little is known about the challenges of nascent digital platform ecosystems in the context of value co-creation. Many recent instantiations of nascent digital platform ecosystems are located within the realm of the Internet of Things. To shed light on challenges regarding value co-creation in nascent digital platform ecosystems, we conduct a Delphi study with 21 experts from leading IoT organizations. Our results suggest that value co-creation in nascent platform ecosystems places significant challenges on balancing openness and control, building trust, and implementing value capture mechanisms. Our findings add empirical evidence to the debate on the evolutionary perception of platform governance by highlighting the importance of ecosystem maturity.
