SELECTING A REQUIREMENT DETERMINATION METHODOLOGY: CONTINGENCY APPROACH REVISITED
Abstract
Prior research has shown that the requirements determination (RD) process has to deal with uncertainty in the task environment. A contingency approach was proposed to select a requirements determination strategy based on an overall assessment of uncertainty in defining application/organizational information requirements. Recent research has shown that organizations process information not only to reduce uncertainty, but also to reduce equivocality. The objective of this paper is to assess the impact of these two dimensions on the selection of a requirement determination strategy. A reclassification of various RD strategies based on their ability to reduce uncertainty and equivocality is proposed and a revised contingency approach for their selection is suggested.
