Abstract

There are relatively few existing studies that provide references for Chinese local firms to use collaboration to carry out breakthrough innovation. This study was conducted on 306 respondents from 153 Chinese manufacturing firms, and results indicate that knowledge co-creation mediates the link between resource complementarity and breakthrough innovation. Crucially, the analysis reveals a mediated moderation mechanism: the synergistic interaction between complementarity and contractual knowledge protection is transmitted via knowledge co-creation to drive innovation outcomes. These findings provide insights for firms that want to carry out collaborative breakthrough innovation but are not sure about partner selection and implementation mechanisms in Chinese settings.
