Description

The Metaverse has been described as a virtual world characterized by several features, some of which are still subject to investigation. Among these, technological immersivity and content centralization stand out as prominent dimensions that can be configured in different ways, giving rise to distinct types of Metaverses. This paper investigates the interplay between different degrees of technological immersivity and content centralization in the Metaverse and analyzes the consequential effects on value creation mechanisms. By drawing parallels to the existing literature on digital platform ecosystems, the study develops a typology that delineates various Metaverse options based on the two aforementioned dimensions and explores the associated value creation mechanisms. The findings of the paper contribute to a deeper understanding of the phenomenon and its implications for various industries. By uncovering the relationships between immersivity, centralization, and value creation, this study offers valuable perspectives to both scholars and practitioners seeking to understand the vast potential of the Metaverse.
