Abstract
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly transforming Information Systems Development (ISD), yet traditional binary adoption models fail to capture its complex, open-ended nature. To understand how ISD professionals integrate these tools, we conducted an exploratory qualitative case study at a telecommunications and software company, applying the Job Characteristics Model (JCM) and the social perspective on ISD. Our analysis identifies a framework of dynamic GenAI user archetypes driven by perceived value and depth of engagement: the Disengaged Sceptic, Cautious User, Frustrated Strategist, and Productive Optimiser. With our study, we contribute to the ISD community with an extended theoretical perspective on post-adoptive GenAI use. Additionally, we equip ISD professionals with guidelines to scale GenAI sustainably within ISD teams through targeted, non-linear adoption.
