Abstract

The global environmental crisis has reached alarming proportions. However, traditional forms of environmental communication are often unable to persuade the public to adopt pro-environemntal behavior (PEB). To address this challenge, we introduce a novel green information system (Green IS) designed to improve environmental communication and motivate people to adopt PEBs. The system uses augmented reality (AR) to simulate environmental issues and is expected to stimulate the natural emotional response to usually insufficent persuasion. We applied the Design Science Research (DSR) approach to define the design principles and develop the prototype of a green AR-based artifact. We demonstrate its potential field use through illustrative scenarios. Next steps in this research project include evaluation of the artifact with different types of users.
