Abstract

This study investigates how sustainable technology use impacts participation in local energy communities, emphasizing its role in advancing the creation of decarbonized and national-independent energy systems. By analyzing key technology-related dimensions, such as frequency, diversity, and gamification, we explore how technology can engage citizens in community-based energy initiatives. Findings reveal that frequent and diverse use, as well as game-like features, positively influence participation. However, this impact is strongly influenced by the citizens’ pro-environmental actions. Those with strong environmental profiles are less dependent on gamification, suggesting that technology is most impactful when tailored to users’ motivational profiles. Additionally, cross-country comparison shows that cultural contexts affect how technology and environmental values interact. Overall, this study highlights that while technology is a powerful tool for promoting collective green energy initiatives, their effectiveness depends on the user’s environmental profile. Therefore, aligning technology with behavioral drivers is key to fostering inclusive and lasting sustainability transitions.
