Description
The combined use of image processing and data analytics is highly relevant for a high number of application scenarios. Supporting systems in healthcare or the full automation of autonomous vehicles based on this combination. Thereby, the most popular concept in this field is named computer vision, but also image mining considers the combined use of image processing and data analytics. Nevertheless, there is no clear distinction between these two concepts in the current scientific discussion. Therefore, the paper aims to clarify the concepts of computer vision and image mining and analyzes which concept is more suitable in which scenarios. To address this need, a structured literature review was done. As a result, differences between the concepts in terms of application area, process, and characteristics are identified. A clarification of the positioning of the concepts could be done. Also, the findings provide advice on which concept is beneficial under what conditions.
