Description
Digital matching platforms are revolutionizing the exchange of products, services, currency, and information. A burgeoning scholarly interest has produced a rich multidisciplinary literature about individual participation in digitally mediated exchanges. While this enthusiasm results in the generation of knowledge across a wide range of phenomena related to this digital exchange space, very few efforts aim to address the integration of insights. To address this limitation, I have conducted a descriptive review of the matching platform literature. Based on a sample of 86 articles focusing on the social and behavioral aspects of matching platforms, I inductively develop a comprehensive framework to guide future research efforts. This framework identifies what we currently know and what we need to investigate further to better understand matching platform participation. The findings indicate that a more in-depth investigation of motivations, individual characteristics, emotions, technological characteristics, and contexts is needed.
