Abstract
This paper describes a project in which information systems techniques are augmenting efforts to innovate software management systems aboard ships via a new global standard. As an introduction to the topic for academics unaware of how and why to participate in standards-making activities, the paper introduces the case with the history of standards governance and its importance within the shipping and maritime industry. The research case and on-going action research project exposes new opportunities for IS research and maritime innovation.
